INTO THE LIGHT First time I saw her she leaned back and smiled Then we stood so close Together, we felt tall Then the room disappeared The way she thoughtfully tasted my name For the first time I followed every word From mouth to ear Eyes without shadows, blues turning bright We’re drawn to each other And into the light A small window in time Suddenly opening Where by chance it’s just you and her Together, at the same place Eyes without shadows, blues turning bright… The feeling when I turned around She was still smiling at me I need to get close to her warm belief I thought I saw her from across the street She was on the inside Her back towards the window Then she turned my way But her face looked different somehow I wasn’t sure it was her With all those people around So I walked away Eyes without shadows, blues turning bright… The feeling when I turned around…

THROUGH THE ALLEYS, ACROSS THE SQUARES The empty stillness of a train return ride Inactivity is activity too There’s always some kid watching you from the corner of his eye I see windows closing, hours grow I’m going out tonight Through the alleys, across the squares To find out what is left Walking the streets till there’s no one around Autumn’s over and there’s little there Feeling flat and like the substance is gone Thoughts are cold and I long to care I’m going out tonight… Easy Living and Blue Gardenia Side by side on my turntable Worlds apart and I’ve tasted both I turn events around till I can’t stay there I’m going out tonight Through the alleys, across the squares To find out what is left They were singing about love and passion rich as wine And somewhere else to go You might get visitors but you dream alone I woke up wanting what I shouldn’t miss Now I should trust when eyes land and lock And it feels like coming home I’m going out tonight…

AS REAL AS IN A DREAM Arriving late afternoon The boat is crossing the lagoon I was waiting for a new age to come find me Behind ancient walls Colored like wet desert sand Out on the terrace at midnight I heard the bells toll We float between the buildings now As real as in a dream The lights glow dim as they flicker on We were lost on narrow streets Set on leaving something worth While moving towards invisibility And being here I did get deep into it Almost too restless To sink in and enjoy I was looking for something as good as longing for it We float between the buildings now… Stranded nights and broken games It was a time of darkening skies And decency was needed from those who have it We’re all in our own And I was moving on in mine But some hands were held out instead of passing Is it just nothing The aching loss of not being there All the things you can no longer do Is there just a void The lacking throb of not being part of time Or somewhere else to go We float between the buildings now…

NOTHING MORE WILL COME OUT OF THIS Walking back from where I’ve been On my way there my hopes grew stronger The streets the same as when I came But I don’t dream any longer It will be faded in the morning And nothing more will come out of this Will it be choked before it sparkles Will it wilt before it blooms Will it not glow before it darkens Will it dry out far too soon It will be faded in the morning And nothing more will come out of this It will be bleaker in the morning And nothing more will come out of this Woke something slumbering for long But just a glimpse and then it’s gone But to go back to how it was I will have less than what I lost It will be faded in the morning…

Write me off 02:56
WRITE ME OFF I don’t want to be on your waiting list tonight I don’t want to be on your waiting list tonight Write me off I don’t want to get caught in your stairwell tonight I don’t want to get cold in your stairwell tonight Write me off I don’t want to be on your waiting list tonight I don’t want to be on your waiting list tonight I don’t want to answer your phone calls I don’t want to hear your voice I don’t want to hear you call me all those funny sounding names I don’t want to be on your waiting list tonight Write me off

Waiting 03:58
WAITING Did you enjoy it while you could Did you know if it was good Did you taste it well enough Not to miss it when it’s lost To see your sad face in the light Surround your heavy silvery eyes Are the days left for you too long Between what you’ll have and what is gone Now you’re waiting Did you mean it when you said I’m glad you’re with me here instead Your voice was soft but your grip hard Around the things you tried to guard Will you be there if I give What I say and what I hint From my solitude and my time And my most cautious lines Now you’re waiting Hearing your voice on my phone Saying your name next to mine Being careful anyway Cause until it’s our time We’ll be waiting We’ll keep on waiting

Tangier 05:26
TANGIER She got her suitcase ready, recognized the station And got off the train She walked along the water, young boys looking As the sun came up behind Spain She climbed the steep stone stairs up to the hotel She got her old room it didn’t look the same The restaurant’s empty like it never used to be All those American writers she used to see Walking the narrow alleys up the hill Getting lost as she liked to do Having a rest up there, resisting the urge Of just letting her days go He’d been down to the Gran Café To try to settle his affairs Now back at the Fuentes he talked to the waiter Took his table upstairs He put away the mint tea and when gazing to the right Walking on to the square he couldn’t believe his eyes He got up from his chair, stood against the rail Leaned over and softly called her name Finally meeting again after all these years She held him close, whispered “my dear”, as her eyes welled up But this won’t be the time, as it never was For them to leave together They found a backroom where they could talk They sat close together but there was little to say When he was free, she was not When he got back, she was lost But when they did meet it was like the world stopped They could be inside it, but never for long So years went on and then were gone He said “I knew someday you’d come” Finally meeting again after all this time She held him close, whispered his name, as her eyes welled up But this won’t be the time, as it never was For them to leave together

WHEN EARLY ENDS AND LATE BEGINS I’m watching the rain I’m watching the clock You said you’d be home early but on my door no knocks I wonder when early ends and late begins I’ve been reading the same lines again and again While my mind keeps picturing Your absent face Wondering when early ends and late begins I’ve been setting the clock back to help you out But I realize though, you may not care about that I try not to think of where you are Are you alright? Are you in a bar? I wonder when early ends and late begins Everywhere I look I see where you’re not I thought I heard you before, I waited Then some other door shut Then I hear your steps I hear you by the door I turn around Let the lights down low Knowing when early ends and late begins

WAS THAT ALL? Time overtakes you and you know that never again Will you be that untouched and unseen The pieces come together and the mysteries dissolve What once seemed infinite becomes reality You had heard the whispers Through all the years that passed What it would be like Before and afterwards Then you wake up in the morning And it’s quiet and it is cold And you ask into the void Was that all? You were never one of the closest But neither that far away And where you didn’t go Your voice had already been Your dreams were always splendid But you woke up like a regular man And you walked the longest roads you’d ever seen Did you lose your longing Did you lose your defeat Did you lose your waiting When you finally found your way there Then you wake up in the morning And it’s quiet and it is cold And you ask into the void Was that all? You filled your cup to the brim Then quickly you drank it down But you were too excited to get the taste Have you got someone there waiting Who wonders what it is like Don’t tell it all if you want it to remain Far, far in it mellowed When you taught yourself how You found your way in to live And you didn’t want to know the way out Then you wake up in the morning And it’s quiet and it is cold And you ask into the void Was that all?

NEW YORK CITY REVISITED Cold gray Thanksgiving afternoon Snow’s coming down heavy and wet Dogs give me suffering glances Longing to be inside again Many years later, Second Avenue Time didn’t leave you behind I fly in and I am here The whole city’s my madeleine cake Walking around in my youth With new bars added Looking for Lakeside, Luna Lounge and Where Dan Lynch’s used to be Walking down Lexington to Old Town Bar It’s there and the jukebox is free Maybe it’s not over it’s just changing Like it’s always been As night falls young people getting ready For a night that will be something they’ve never seen Went to thrift shops all day In the dark and damp I walked home I am here but I don’t belong Like I used to do In dreams I am often here But always just about to leave Time is running out and I’m looking for places But they’re not where they used to be Time is running out and I’m looking for places Things look different to me

about

Stellan Wahlström Drift Band is back with their new and fifth album "As real as in a dream".

“Wahlström has found a pace and space that remains pleasingly consistent. Skirting close to artsy alt-rock – think Television or even Lou Reed – he has an amazing talent for telling clear narrative stories set to lovely lilting melodies.
There’s a distinctly live feel to this album which was recorded directly onto analogue tape with the minimum of overdubs or flashy effects from The Drift Band.”
★★★★
//Shindig (UK)

“He sings with similar unhurried patience, surveying scenes and seeing wider, discontented pictures, like “Nothing more will come out of this” with its “bleaker morning coming”. But the more rousing, guitar-centric “Into the light” and “Waiting” are best, befitting boys that once played CBGB, and whose leader drummed for ’80s garage faves Wylde Mammoths. Good songwriting remains anyone’s friend”.
